Richmond Park is one of the best urban walking spots in the UK. Despite being just 30 minutes from Central London, it feels like a true escape – with open grasslands, ancient oak trees, and hundreds of free-roaming deer. For other Greater London walks, check out my Tube Trekking section, for other off the main tourist area routes, which start and end at various Tube Stations.

This circular route gives you a full loop of the park, offering a real mix of terrain – wide open views across to St Paul’s Cathedral, peaceful woodland, small lakes, and plenty of picnic spots. Ideal for a half-day hike or an extended nature walk without leaving the city.

Hike Description

Start your loop from Pembroke Lodge, home to one of London’s best coffee spots with a view. A quick detour to King Henry’s Mound gives you the famous protected sightline to St Paul’s Cathedral, framed by a narrow tree tunnel nearly 10 miles away.

Following the Tamsin Trail, you’ll skirt the outer edge of the park, passing through peaceful woodland and open grasslands. There’s a real sense of space here – rare in the capital – and if you’re lucky, you’ll spot red or fallow deer grazing near the trail.

The circuit takes in Pen Ponds, where you can pause for a rest, and works its way back past the Royal Ballet School before rejoining the road near Richmond Gate. It’s a perfect mix of wild and urban – and all without leaving Zone 4.
