My honest Water-to-Go review after two years

I use both the 75cl Eco Active bottle and the 1 Litre Eco Active bottle. They feel solid without being unnecessarily heavy, and that durability is one of the reasons I prefer them to softer collapsible alternatives.

Most importantly, I have actually relied on them away from home. I have filtered tap water in Morocco, collected water from rivers and streams while hiking, and carried the bottles on long walking challenges when being able to refill safely was extremely useful.

Water-to-Go Eco Active filter bottle

Using it in Morocco

Morocco was where carrying a filter bottle felt most important. Drinking unfamiliar local water can carry a risk of illness, so having a bottle that allowed me to filter tap water gave me extra reassurance and reduced my dependence on single-use bottled water.

Using it around Chamonix

I also used Water-to-Go while hiking in the mountains around Chamonix. On long mountain days, being able to refill from a suitable freshwater source can reduce how much water you need to carry from the start. You must still assess the source sensibly and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Using it on UK walking challenges

On long UK walking challenges, the bottle gives me another option when I need to collect water from a river or stream. That does not mean every water source is automatically appropriate, but it is useful to have a filtration system with me rather than relying entirely on carrying enough water for a full day.

75cl or 1 Litre Eco Active bottle?

75cl Eco Active

The 75cl bottle is the more compact of the two I use. I would choose it when I want a practical everyday size or know that refill opportunities will be reasonably frequent.

1 Litre Eco Active

The 1 litre version gives me more water between refills, which can be valuable on longer walks or while travelling. The trade-off is that it naturally takes up more room when full.

My choice depends on the day rather than one bottle being universally better. For a long or remote route, I favour more capacity; for general travel and shorter outings, the smaller bottle is easier to carry.

How the Water-to-Go filter works

Water-to-Go says its filter combines three forms of filtration: a mechanical barrier, an electrical charge that attracts contaminants and activated carbon that helps reduce contaminants, tastes and odours. The company states that the system removes up to 99.9999% of microbiological contaminants from non-saltwater sources.

Water-to-Go three-in-one filter technology explained

Those are manufacturer claims rather than tests I have independently reproduced. What I can say from personal experience is that the bottles have worked reliably for me across two years of travel and hiking.

Important filter and safety information

  • Activate a new filter: fill the bottle and leave the filter submerged for at least 15 minutes before first use.
  • Replace it on time: Water-to-Go rates each standard filter for approximately 200 litres, or around three months when filtering two litres per day.
  • Use freshwater only: the filter is not designed to make seawater drinkable.
  • Do not add flavoured products before filtering: cordial, juice, isotonic powders and similar additives can reduce filter efficiency.
  • Keep the drinking area clean: avoid allowing unfiltered water to contaminate the lid or spout.
  • Assess the source: filtration is not a substitute for sensible judgement. Avoid water that may contain industrial pollution, toxic chemicals or other hazards outside the product’s intended use.

Always read the current Water-to-Go instructions supplied with your bottle and filter. If a water source looks or smells seriously contaminated, choose a safer source rather than assuming any portable filter can make it suitable.

Water-to-Go pros and cons

What I like

  • Strong and durable without feeling excessively heavy
  • Useful for hiking, travel and long-distance challenges
  • Easy to refill from a suitable tap or freshwater source
  • Two bottle sizes that suit different days
  • Reduces reliance on disposable bottled water

What could be better

  • The rigid bottle takes up space even when empty
  • A collapsible alternative may suit ultralight packers better
  • The filter must be activated and replaced correctly
  • It is not suitable for seawater or every form of chemical contamination

My verdict: is Water-to-Go worth it?

Yes, for the way I travel and hike, Water-to-Go is worth it. I have continued using the bottles for two years because they are durable, easy to carry and give me a practical way to filter water while travelling or on long walks. Morocco was the strongest test, while Chamonix and my UK challenges showed how useful the bottle can be outdoors.

The size is the one possible drawback if you prefer equipment that folds down very small. I personally accept that trade-off because I would rather carry a sturdy bottle that can withstand regular use.
