Best Outdoor Activities in the Lake District – Things to do in the Lake District

Browse and search adventure sports in the Lake District National Park.

The Lake District is one of the best-known outdoor destinations in England, bringing together high fells, deep valleys, woodland and a remarkable concentration of lakes within one National Park. Walking may be the activity most closely associated with the area, but there are many other ways to experience the landscape both on land and on the water.

Depending on current availability, you may find guided walks, climbing, paddlesports, outdoor skills and other organised adventures taking place across the Lake District and surrounding parts of Cumbria. Some provide an approachable introduction for beginners, while others are intended for people looking to develop their skills or take on a bigger challenge.

This guide brings the currently bookable experiences together in one place, alongside practical advice and links to my own Lake District walking routes. The selection is still developing, so additional activities should appear automatically as Adventuro adds more local providers.

How the activity listings work

The bookable experiences on this page are supplied by Adventuro and operated by independent activity providers. Welsh Man Walking does not run these activities. If you book after following one of the links, I may receive a commission at no extra cost to you. Prices and live availability are confirmed on Adventuro when you book.

The listings below search within 50 km of a central Lake District location and combine every currently available activity type into one collection. Because the search uses a radius rather than the National Park boundary, an occasional experience may be located in a neighbouring part of Cumbria. Always open the listing and confirm its exact meeting point before booking accommodation or making travel arrangements.

If no activity cards appear temporarily, it means Adventuro does not currently have matching bookable experiences within the search area. It does not mean that outdoor activities are unavailable throughout the Lake District.

Choosing an activity

The Lake District offers experiences for a wide range of ages and abilities, but the activity title alone cannot tell you whether a particular session is suitable. Before booking, check:

  • The precise meeting point
  • Duration and expected fitness
  • Minimum age and previous experience
  • Terrain, exposure or swimming requirements
  • Group size and instructor ratio
  • What clothing and specialist equipment are included
  • The provider’s cancellation and bad-weather arrangements

A beginner label normally means that previous technical experience is not required. It does not necessarily mean the activity will be physically easy or appropriate for every participant.

Planning an outdoor day in the Lake District

🧐 Weather and conditions
Conditions can change quickly across the Lake District, particularly on high or exposed ground. Check an appropriate mountain forecast before travelling rather than relying only on a general town forecast. Water temperature and wind can also affect activities on the lakes, even when conditions appear calm from the shore.

🧐 Clothing and equipment
Your kit will depend on the activity. A mountain walk may require suitable footwear, waterproof and warm layers, food, water, navigation and emergency essentials. Providers may supply technical equipment such as helmets, harnesses, wetsuits or buoyancy aids, but inclusions vary. Follow the kit list for the individual experience.

🧐 Getting there and parking
The Lake District covers a large area, and journeys between valleys can take longer than the distance suggests. Confirm the exact meeting point before choosing where to stay. Popular roads and car parks become extremely busy during weekends, school holidays and fine weather, so consider buses, boats or other public transport where practical and never obstruct gates, residents or emergency access.

🧐 Staying safe on and around the water
The lakes are a major part of the area’s appeal, but open water brings cold temperatures, changing weather, boat traffic and difficult entry or exit points. Follow the provider’s instructions, wear the required safety equipment and never assume that a location is appropriate for swimming or launching simply because it is publicly accessible.

🧐 Respecting the National Park
The Lake District is a protected landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to working communities. Take litter home, keep dogs under effective control, protect livestock and wildlife, avoid damaging paths and vegetation, and use designated parking. If a popular place is already overcrowded, be prepared to choose a suitable alternative.

🧐 Booking and availability
The cards on this page are refreshed from Adventuro, while final prices, dates and availability are shown on the booking page. The independent provider is responsible for operating the experience and deciding whether it can proceed safely in the prevailing conditions.

Whichever experience you choose, check the details carefully, prepare for changing conditions and treat the landscape and its communities with respect. The activity collection will continue to update as Adventuro’s Lake District coverage develops.
