Region: San Candido (Innichen) / Alta Pusteria (Hochpustertal) – Dolomites – South Tyrol, Italy

Places To Stay: To hike the Monte Elmo, you can stay in Dobbiaco, San Candido, Sesto or slightly further away you have Cortina d’Ampezzo. There are also plenty of rural villages where you can stay and various types of hotels, B&B’s or hostels in the Veneto region. Looking for more Dolomites trails? Head to my ‘Dolomites Hiking Guides‘ page to see hiking routes in the different regions and.

Below are a few ideas for day tours and transfers around San Candido, with GetYourGuide offering great discounts and easy booking + a huge amount of options in the Dolomites area.

If you want the big view day without doing anything sketchy or technical, Monte Elmo (Helm) is perfect. You’re walking right on the Italian–Austrian border ridge, with the Dolomites to one side and wide Alpine horizons to the other, plus a very achievable summit if you use the lifts to get you up high quickly. And there’s a real bit of history up here too: this whole ridge was tangled up in the WW1 era border story, and you still see traces of old military stuff dotted around the top.

Getting There: Directions, GPX and Map

Start/Finish: Rifugio Auronzo car park (Tre Cime toll road)

  • Start/Finish: Helm (Monte Elmo) cable car upper station (Helmjet area above Versciaco / Vierschach, near San Candido)
  • How to get there (car): Drive to Versciaco/Vierschach (just east of San Candido) and park near the lift base.
  • Public transport: San Candido is well connected by train/bus in Val Pusteria, and from there you can reach Versciaco and the lift easily in season (Dolomites public transport is very workable if you base yourself in town).
  • Download the GPX file here.
  • Follow this route on my Outdooractive profile.

Travel Data: I use eSIMs to stay connected — quick setup and no roaming faff. Sim Local has been solid in Italy/Europe with good prices and coverage.

Hike Description

This walk starts the easy way, you take the lift up and you then step out high up into fresh air and onto open slopes. From the Helm/Monte Elmo side you’re on panoramic ground, and within minutes you’ll be stopping because the views are incredible, it’s actually hard to believe your own eyes as you try and take it all in.

What makes this walk feel different is the border history. Monte Elmo sits right on the main ridge line that forms part of the Italy–Austria border, and around the summit area there are remnants and stories tied into the shifting border and the militarised era around the World Wars. The landscape is stunning, but you also get that quiet reminder that these mountains have seen and experienced a lot of not so positive human visits.

The summit itself is very doable, a steady plod rather than a scramble and you’re rewarded with huge visibility across the surrounding ranges. There’s also a well-known summit cross story: a summit cross was erected in 1953 by an international group of boy scouts as a call for peace, which feels pretty fitting up on a border mountain.

After the summit buzz, you carry on ridge walking towards Sillianer Hütte, a great Rifugio on this route. It’s the perfect place for a coffee, cake, or lunch, and it’s one of those huts where you can easily lose a few hours without noticing.

Then it’s a simply matter of looping back on the signed return path to the lift station. In good weather it’s an easy-going route; but please remember that the weather can change quickly in the Dolomites.

Places to Stay in the Dolomites – My Picks

I’ve put together a few guides to make choosing a hotel in the Dolomites easier. If you’re after a romantic break, I’ve found some cosy hideaways. If it’s hiking that’s front and centre, I’ve rounded up the best hotels with trails right from the door. There are also ski-in ski-out favourites, family-friendly bases, and hotels with those wow-factor mountain views or even hot tubs to sink into after a long day.

Practicalities

  • Start early: you’ll get calmer paths, better light, and less faff at the lifts/huts.
  • Weather: this is a ridge. If cloud builds or wind gets up, it can feel serious fast — pack a proper waterproof + warm layer even on blue skies.
  • Footwear: trail shoes are fine in dry conditions; after rain, go grippier (wet rock + loose gravel can be slippy).
  • Cash: huts can be card-friendly, but cash still saves hassle (toilets/snacks).
  • Food & water: you’ve got huts, but still carry enough water — it’s exposed up high and can be roasting in summer.
  • Navigation: generally well signed, but if mist rolls in, a GPX makes life easier.
  • Lift times: check last uplift/downlift times so you don’t end the day doing an unexpected mega descent.
