If you want to climb Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) but avoid the crowds, the Rhyd Ddu Path is one of the best ways to do it. Itโs quieter, more remote-feeling, and gives you that proper mountain day without the chaos you get on Llanberis or Pyg/Miners. The route builds gradually, opens out into wide views across Snowdonia, and finishes with a narrow ridge that adds just a touch of edge without being overly technical. Itโs a brilliant route if you want the summit, but with a bit more space to actually enjoy it.
I have all the routes up to Yr Wyddfa in one page, you can use this Yr Wyddfa (Snowden) Pillar Page to tick off your summits, work out Start Points and download GPX files, and you also get great Accommodation ideas for families, couples and solo travellers.

Hike Description
The walk starts right from the car park at Rhyd Ddu, where the path heads off steadily behind the buildings and quickly gets you into open mountain ground. Itโs a really nice gradual start, nothing too aggressive, just a steady climb that lets you get into your rhythm early on.

As you gain height, the views begin to open out behind you across the quieter western side of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. If you have done the more popular walk up Yr Wyddfa via the PYG or Miners’ tracks from Pen y Pass, you’ll quickly see that this route feels different from the busier paths. Youโre not constantly surrounded by people, and it feels like a proper mountain day rather than a queue to the summit.

The middle section climbs up towards Llechog ridge, and this is where it starts to get a bit more interesting. The path narrows slightly, and you begin to feel a sense of exposure, but you don’t need to worry because itโs not technical, more a case of watching your footing and just taking your time as you make your way through this section, it’s not anything sketchy.

From here, you reach Bwlch Main, where the Rhyd Ddu Path joins the main routes coming up from the south. The final stretch to the summit is a rocky push, and youโll notice more people again as you approach the top.

Reaching the summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) is always a great achievement. On a clear day, youโve got views across the whole of Eryri, out to Anglesey, and even across to Ireland if youโre lucky.

The descent is simply back the same way. Take your time on the ridge section, especially if itโs wet or windy, and once youโre back on the lower slopes itโs a straightforward walk out to the car park.
