If you’re looking for the easiest and most straightforward route up Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), the Llanberis Path is the one you need. It’s long rather than difficult, following a steady gradient all the way to the summit alongside the mountain railway. There’s nothing technical, no scrambling, and navigation is as simple as it gets, but don’t underestimate it. It’s still a full mountain day, just a more gradual one.

I have all the routes up to Yr Wyddfa in one page, you can use this Yr Wyddfa (Snowden) Pillar Page to tick off your summits, work out Start Points and download GPX files, and you also get great Accommodation ideas for families, couples and solo travellers.

Getting There: Directions, GPX and Map

  • Start/Finish: Llanberis Path Start (Victoria Terrace)
  • By car: Multiple car parks in Llanberis (Padarn Country Park, village parking — arrive early in peak season)

Hike Description

The walk starts right in the village of Llanberis, heading up from Victoria Terrace before quickly joining the main path that winds its way steadily up the mountain. There’s no sudden steep section to this walk, just a consistent, gradual climb that you can settle into early.

You’ll follow the Snowdon Mountain Railway for much of the route, which makes navigation simple and gives you regular reference points as you climb. The early stages feel more like a long uphill walk than a mountain, but don’t let that fool you, it keeps going, and please check the weather as it can change very quickly, and make sure you have some food and water with you.

Around the halfway point near Halfway House, the views begin to open up more, and the sense of being on a mountain really kicks in. From here, the path continues steadily, with the landscape becoming more rugged as you gain height.

The final section from Clogwyn to the summit is where you’ll start to notice more people, especially where the Llanberis Path meets the other main routes. The gradient picks up slightly, but it’s still very manageable.

Reaching the summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) is always a great moment. On a clear day, the views stretch across Snowdonia, Anglesey, and beyond.

The descent is simply back the same way, long, steady, and one where your knees will definitely know about it by the end. You are really exposed all the way, so just set off with what’s needed for all weathers.

Places to Stay

If you want to stay close to the start, Llanberis is lively and perfectly placed, but accommodation is booked up quickly. For more options, nearby Beddgelert is a brilliant base with pubs, cafés, and access to multiple routes. Caernarfon is another good option if you want more choice, shops, and easy access across Snowdonia.

For accommodation, use the usual Booking.com affiliate link and search for Llanberis, Beddgelert, Caernarfon or Snowdonia.
