San Candido (known as Innichen in German) is a peaceful yet incredibly scenic town located in the Sesto/Sexten Valley in the eastern Dolomites, near the Austrian border. While it’s quieter than the likes of Cortina or Ortisei, San Candido is a fantastic base for hikers looking for a more relaxed and authentic mountain experience, with excellent access to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park, and the Sesto Dolomites.
The town has a compact, walkable centre filled with Tyrolean charm, think onion-domed churches, mountain-facing cafés, and traditional bakeries. It’s also well-connected by public transport, with direct trains to Bolzano and regular buses to popular trailheads, making it a top choice for car-free travellers.
From San Candido, hikers can reach the iconic Tre Cime area via shuttle or short drive, wander through forested trails near Lago di Braies, or explore family-friendly valley paths and hut-to-hut routes in the Dolomiti di Sesto range. With gentle riverside walks, panoramic balcony trails, and dramatic limestone peaks all within easy reach, this town offers variety without the crowds.
Whether you’re tackling a bucket-list route to Rifugio Locatelli or strolling to a nearby alpine pasture for strudel and views, San Candido gives you a peaceful, scenic, and very walkable home base in the Dolomites. Ideal for couples, families, and solo adventurers alike.
