We went looking for a majestic sunrise on Pen Y Fan, the highest peak in Southern Britain, and we got what we came for, it was beautiful.
It’s January, and thankfully we had great weather for this time of year which for me is ice cold, and dry, I don’t mind rain also, but for a sunrise you always pray for that perfect day.
I didn’t sleep that well and then got up at 4.30am to get ready and pick the boys up to head to Pen Y Fan and get to the top ready for the sunrise.
We took the path up from opposite the Storey Arms car park, I will warn you this is a much harder way up than the normal way up, and with the ice and very slippery paths and stones it was a really difficult walk up.
A more enjoyable walk up, would be to park if you can in the Storey Arms car park as it’s free, then walk down to the main car park, and walk up from there.

If you are going to do anything like this, you can get some decent anti-slip grips for your boots from Amazon or better still from a shop or outlet trying to compete with Amazon, I only use Amazon as a last resort I prefer to give my money to local retailers if I can.
What amazed all of us as we arrived, was a sheer amount of people who had the same idea, we looked up and there was already a trail of head lights heading up from both paths at around 6.30am, and then at the top I’d say there were well over 100 people.
So at the top I managed to set the GoPro up facing the rising sun, found a few stones to sit on, and we had our breakfast waiting for the sun to come up
Check my video out below, it was beautiful. 👇
I have a couple of walks that take in Pen Y Fan, but if you wanted to start from the ‘Pont ar Daf car park’, you can’t go wrong really, you just follow the people already walking up to it, or if you find yourself on your own there are some start details etc in the Pen Y Fan Sunset walk, in the link below.
