Selva di Val Gardena (known as Wolkenstein in German and Sëlva in Ladin) is one of the best hiking bases in the entire Dolomites region. Tucked into the upper end of Val Gardena, this high-altitude village sits between towering peaks and opens directly onto trails that climb into the Puez-Odle Nature Park, the Sella Massif, and the Sassolungo Group.
Selva is a hiker’s paradise, the cable cars leave right from the village, whisking you up to panoramic ridgelines, mountain passes, and alpine meadows. Highlights include the Dantercepies lift to Passo Gardena, the Ciacianur trail into the Odle mountains, and high-altitude connections to Alta Via 2. The entire area is part of a vast, well-marked network of trails, with options for every level, from easy walks between huts to challenging scrambles across limestone ridges.
The village itself is a blend of rustic charm and upscale alpine style, with cosy hotels, guesthouses, gear shops, and Tyrolean restaurants. It’s quieter and more mountain-focused than Ortisei, making it ideal for serious hikers, photographers, and nature lovers. There’s also great access to via ferrata routes and hut-to-hut trekking.
With jaw-dropping scenery in every direction, convenient lift access, and a location deep in the heart of Dolomite territory, Selva is a top pick for anyone planning a walking holiday in the mountains.
