Les Contamines-Montjoie is a peaceful alpine village tucked away in the Montjoie Valley, just a short distance from the bustle of Chamonix. It offers a quieter, more relaxed base for hikers while still delivering spectacular views and easy access to high mountain trails, especially for those looking to enjoy a slice of the Tour du Mont Blanc without the crowds.
The village sits at the foot of Mont Joly and lies within the stunning Les Contamines Nature Reserve — the largest protected area in the Haute-Savoie. Hikers can explore an extensive network of well-marked trails through flower-filled meadows, alpine lakes, ancient hamlets, and high cols. Popular walks include the climb to Refuge de la Balme, the Roman road to Notre-Dame de la Gorge, and balcony hikes overlooking the Mont Blanc massif.
Les Contamines also offers direct access to one of the most scenic stretches of the Tour du Mont Blanc, heading either toward Les Chapieux or up and over Col du Bonhomme. The lift system (including the Signal gondola) helps shorten ascents, making more routes accessible to all levels.
