Region: Ortisei — Val Gardena, Dolomites, Italy

Places To Stay: Ortisei is the perfect place to stay for this one, as you have easy access to lifts, great food, and plenty of hotel choice from simple B&Bs to full-on spa stays. If you want to wake up on the plateau, hotels around Compatsch make sunrise doable.

This is a wonderfully relaxed day out across Alpe di Siusi, the vast high-altitude meadow known in German as Seiser Alm. The gondola from Ortisei carries you directly to Mont Sëuc, where the walking begins with wide mountain views and the Sassolungo and Sassopiatto group dominating the skyline.

From the upper station, the route follows a mixture of broad tracks and quieter meadow paths past traditional wooden huts, working farms and several excellent places to stop for lunch or coffee. The terrain is never particularly technical, although the longer version of the circuit still covers a reasonable distance and includes several steady climbs.

What makes this walk so enjoyable is its flexibility. The full panoramic loop makes for a rewarding day on the plateau, combining wide mountain views, traditional alpine huts and rolling meadows. Although there are no technical sections, the route still covers over 15km with around 680m of ascent, so it should be treated as a full day in the mountains rather than a gentle stroll. Either way, it delivers enormous Dolomites scenery without the exposed ridges, scrambling or difficult terrain found on some of the region’s higher routes.

If you’re exploring the Dolomites, there are plenty more incredible walks nearby. The Seceda Ridgeline Hike from Ortisei offers one of the region’s most iconic viewpoints, while the Cinque Torri Circular Walk combines spectacular limestone towers with fascinating First World War history. Hike Description

The day begins with the gondola from Ortisei to Mont Sëuc, which carries you from the centre of the village to the Alpe di Siusi plateau at approximately 2,000 metres.

Once you step out of the upper station you are immediately surrounded by wide-open views, it’s incredibly beautiful and it takes a little while absorbing it all before setting off. The green plateau rolls away in front of you, with wooden huts and crossed by a network of tracks, while Sassolungo and Sassopiatto rise up in the distance.

The first part of the walk follows a broad panoramic path away from Mont Sëuc. The waymarking is generally excellent and much of the surrounding landscape remains visible, which makes it an approachable place to walk even without any technically difficult terrain.

It is beginner-friendly without feeling uneventful. The paths undulate gently across the plateau, and the scale of the landscape means the view seems to change every few minutes. Sassolungo may remain the main focal point, but the wider panorama also stretches towards the Sella Group, Sciliar and other surrounding Dolomite peaks.

Several huts and mountain restaurants can be incorporated into the route, including places such as Malga Sanon and Ritsch Schwaige, depending on the exact loop followed. They make ideal stops for coffee, lunch or something sweet, with the usual South Tyrolean favourites such as dumplings, soup and strudel often available.

The middle of the route crosses rolling meadows and working pastureland on a combination of gravel tracks and narrower walking paths. Wooden barns and huts are scattered across the grass, while benches provide plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the scenery.

Although Alpe di Siusi is often described as an easy walking destination, the full loop should not be underestimated. There are no technical sections, but a route of 10–14km with several climbs and descents still requires a reasonable level of fitness. The open landscape also provides very little shelter from strong sunshine or rapidly changing weather.

One of the advantages of walking here is the number of intersecting trails. Those wanting a shorter day can turn back towards Mont Sëuc using one of the earlier connecting paths, while anyone feeling strong can extend the route farther across the plateau.

The return gradually works its way back towards the Ortisei gondola station, with Sassolungo and Sassopiatto continuing to dominate much of the skyline. Because the upper station remains a recognisable reference point during parts of the walk, the route rarely feels enclosed or confusing, although carrying the GPX is still sensible where multiple tracks meet.

Before taking the gondola back to Ortisei, it is worth spending a little more time around Mont Sëuc. The viewpoint near the station provides one final look across the meadows and surrounding mountains and is an excellent place to finish the walk.

This is not a route built around one dramatic summit or exposed ridge. Its appeal comes from the whole landscape: broad alpine meadows, traditional huts, easy-going paths and uninterrupted views across some of the most recognisable mountains in the Dolomites.

Places to Stay in the Dolomites – My Picks

I’ve put together a few guides to make choosing a hotel in the Dolomites easier. If you’re after a romantic break, I’ve found some cosy hideaways. If it’s hiking that’s front and centre, I’ve rounded up the best hotels with trails right from the door. There are also ski-in ski-out favourites for winter trips, family-friendly bases, and hotels with those wow-factor mountain views or even hot tubs to sink into after a long day.

Practicalities

  • Cable car: The Ortisei–Alpe di Siusi (Mont Sëuc) cable car usually operates from around May to early November, but always check the latest opening dates and departure times before travelling.
  • Food & drink: There are plenty of mountain huts along the route serving coffee, cakes and traditional South Tyrolean food. Cards are accepted at many huts, but carrying some cash is still worthwhile.
  • Gear: Good walking shoes are ideal in dry conditions. Although there are no technical sections, the route covers over 15km with around 680m of ascent, so lightweight hiking boots and trekking poles can make the day more comfortable.
  • Weather: The plateau is very exposed with little shade. Afternoon thunderstorms are common during summer, so it’s best to start early and carry a waterproof layer.
  • Families: The terrain is generally gentle and well maintained, making it suitable for active families, although the full route is a long day for younger children.
  • Route options: The network of paths across Alpe di Siusi makes it easy to shorten the walk if needed, with several signed routes leading back towards the Mont Sëuc cable car station.
