Skyscanner is a flight comparison website that searches millions of routes, airlines, and travel agents to find you the best flight deals. The way I look at it is that it’s like Google for flights, I type in where I want to go, and it does the work for me.

Skyscanner stands out because it’s so flexible. You can search by entire countries, view prices for a whole month, or even just click “Everywhere” if you don’t know where you want to go, only that you want to go somewhere cheap, I’ve done this before, and it’s very tempting, and as much as I want too spending a weekend in India isn’t going to work for me at the moment, but I will!

Probably easier to break it down into a few points:

Instead of just showing the big-name airlines, Skyscanner pulls in low-cost carriers, local airlines, and online travel agencies too. That means more options – and usually better prices.

3. THE “EVERYWHERE” FEATURE IS BRILLIANT.

If you’re flexible with your travel plans, this is where Skyscanner really shines. Choose your departure airport, set your dates (or even pick “cheapest month”), and Skyscanner will show you a list of destinations sorted by price. Perfect for spontaneous getaways, if you can!

4. GREAT FILTERING TOOLS

You can use the filter tools to only look for what you need, such as only direct flights, flying with hand luggage only, you can filter your searches so then it’s great for narrowing down your choices and finding flights that actually suit how you like to travel.

5. IT DOESN’T CHARGE YOU TO BOOK

Skyscanner itself doesn’t sell you the flight – it sends you to the airline or travel agency’s website to book directly. That means there’s no extra booking fee from Skyscanner, and you can often pick your seat or add baggage at the source.

To get the most out of it, here’s how I like to use Skyscanner:

• Be flexible with your dates. Searching for flights across a whole month (instead of fixed dates) can save you a lot of money.
• Use “Everywhere” when you’re open-minded. It’s a fun way to discover cheap destinations you might not have thought of.
• Set price alerts. If you know where you want to go but aren’t quite ready to book, you can set a price alert and get notified when the price changes.
• Check the flight details. Some of the cheapest flights can have long layovers or weird routes. Always check the full itinerary before booking.

Any Downsides?

This is strange, and I have thought about it, and there aren’t many in honesty. Occasionally you’ll be redirected to a third-party site that isn’t as good as Skyscanner, but Skyscanner does a decent job of highlighting reliable travel agents. I usually stick to booking directly with the airline when possible.

Also, not every airline is included like Ryanair sometimes in Europe, but that’s true of most flight search engines. It’s a minor issue, as the flights are usually good enough, so I don’t need to stress about who isn’t there.
