AllTrails – Let’s See What it has to Offer…

If you’ve ever found yourself halfway up a hill, boots muddy, map flapping in the wind, and that creeping doubt kicking in, “Am I even on the right path?”, then AllTrails might just become your new best friend. It’s an all adventure app that helps the way you explore, helping you find, follow, and share walking routes wherever you are, whether that’s a quick woodland loop close to home or a full-on mountain adventure in Europe.

I’ve been using it for years, from misty mornings in the Brecon Beacons to rocky trails in the Dolomites, and it’s saved me more than once from heading the wrong way. While it’s not without its quirks, it’s easily one of the most valuable tools in my hiking kit, and a big reason I’ve been able to confidently explore so many new places without worrying about getting lost.

There is a FREE version which has limited options, but with the AllTrails Plus Membership you can unlock additional features including:

  • Access to offline trails, parks, and areas
  • 3D trail previews
  • Wrong turn alerts
  • Live sharing

What Exactly Is AllTrails?

AllTrails is a web and mobile app built for people who love the outdoors, this includes walkers, trail runners, mountain explorers, and Sunday strollers. You can browse hundreds of thousands of trails worldwide, read real reviews, check trail conditions, and follow GPS-tracked maps from your phone.

It’s basically a digital guide that you keep in your pocket. The app will give you: up-to-date info from other hikers, a huge variety of route maps in your area, and it also gives you difficulty ratings, so you can assess the walk before you start. So, whether you’re looking for summits or exploring low-level woodland, it’s easy to use and once you start logging your own walks, you can always use them again to be the leader taking others out.

My Experience Using AllTrails

I started with AllTrails while looking for new routes in South Wales. My routine: filter by area and distance, look for something new, see if my hiking buddies fancy it, get up go! Seeing recent photos and reviews helps plan the day properly, no more mystery footpaths that take you!

Overseas it’s even more valuable. On routes in Norway and Italy, offline maps were a lifesaver. With no signal in the mountains, being able to navigate confidently offline made the small AllTrails Plus upgrade worth every penny.

With the AllTrails Plus membership you can unlock additional features including access to offline trails, parks, and areas; 3D trail previews; wrong turn alerts; and live sharing. The 30% off an annual AllTrails Plus membership, isn’t available everywhere, so please take advantage of it, and you can enjoy more time outside safely. Click here to go straight to the offer.

What I Love About It

  • Super intuitive app: Clean, quick, and distraction-free.
  • Offline maps: Download before you set off and you’re sorted when signal disappears.
  • Community reviews: Real tips and warnings from walkers on the same trail.
  • Off-route alerts: A nudge if you drift from the path — great on unfamiliar routes.
  • Global coverage: From the Brecon Beacons to Tokyo — there’s almost always a nearby trail.
  • Photos & elevation profiles: See what’s coming (and how steep!) before you start.

The Honest Bits (Because No App Is Perfect)

The free version is great to try, Plus has offline maps, trail previews, wrong turn alerts and more but the real power is in AllTrails Peak. The Peak version has offline maps, off-route alerts, weather overlays, & more. Recording long hikes can drain battery, so a small power bank is handy. For regular walkers, the Peak features more than pay for themselves in confidence and convenience.

Just to note, the 30% off offer is only available on the Plus annual membership.

Who It’s Best For

  • Weekend walkers exploring new local routes
  • Hikers & scramblers tackling bigger days out
  • Trail runners & cyclists who want elevation and distance data
  • Travellers who love discovering walks abroad

Basically, if you like being outdoors, there’s a use for AllTrails from family strolls to full-day mountain routes. I have used it locally in Wales, and when I’ve taken groups away to Italy, Norway and Switzerland.

My Verdict

AllTrails quietly transforms the way you hike. It helps you plan better, stay safe, and discover trails you’d otherwise miss. The free version is a great start; the ‘Plus’ upgrade adds genuinely useful features that make it an important part of your gear if you walk regularly.

I’m happy to recommend it, and honestly, it’s one of those rare affiliate partnerships that fits perfectly with what I do here at Welsh Man Walking. I’d be recommending it anyway, affiliate link or not.

Final Thoughts

It’s hard to overstate how much easier AllTrails makes planning walks. It’s user-friendly, inspiring, and gives you the confidence to go further without worrying about getting lost. Having reviews, maps, and GPS in one place is a game-changer.

If you fancy giving it a go, you can join AllTrails here. It doesn’t cost you anything extra to use my link, but it helps support Welsh Man Walking — thank you if you do!
