All of my walking guides and adventures are free to read, and always will be. To help keep them coming, I’ve partnered with a few carefully chosen affiliate sites — including Booking.com, GetYourGuide, and Skyscanner. If you ever book accommodation, tours, or travel through one of these platforms, I’d be so grateful if you clicked through from my website first. It won’t cost you a penny more, but I may earn a small commission, which helps support the site. 👉 click this link, to read more about how it works and see the full list of partners I use on this website.

Alleghe is a peaceful lakeside village nestled in the shadow of Monte Civetta, one of the most dramatic and iconic peaks in the Dolomites. Located in the Belluno province of Veneto, Alleghe combines serene alpine charm with access to some truly spectacular hiking terrain, especially if you love lakes, forests, and towering rock faces.

The heart of the village sits beside Lago di Alleghe, a stunning mountain lake formed by a landslide in the 18th century. From here, cable cars whisk hikers up into the Civetta mountain group, home to epic ridgeline hikes, panoramic viewpoints, and high-altitude rifugi like Rifugio Coldai. One of the most popular hikes in the area is to Lago Coldai, a glacial lake tucked beneath the Civetta cliffs. Hikers can also explore parts of the Alta Via 1, scenic routes across the Val di Zoldo, and quiet trails through the Monte Pelmo and Moiazza massifs.

Alleghe has a relaxed, family-friendly feel, with lakeside cafes, traditional mountain hotels, and fewer crowds than hotspots like Cortina or Canazei. It’s an especially good base for nature lovers, photographers, and those who want to combine hiking with peaceful evenings by the water. It also makes a great base for hut-to-hut adventures, with many long-distance routes passing nearby.

If you’re seeking a quieter, scenic base for hiking in the Dolomites — with easy lake walks, challenging alpine routes, and unforgettable Civetta views — Alleghe is a brilliant choice that often flies under the radar.
