The Oxford City Centre Circular is a beautiful 5km self-guided walk through the city of dreaming spires, perfect for those who want to soak up centuries of history, admire grand architecture, and wander among college quads, riverbanks, and cobbled streets.
This circular route showcases some of Oxford’s most iconic highlights: the Radcliffe Camera, Bodleian Library, Christ Church College, and Bridge of Sighs. You’ll also stroll through the Covered Market, alongside the River Thames (locally called the Isis), and pass famous filming locations from Harry Potter and Inspector Morse.

Hike Description
Start from Carfax Tower in the centre of Oxford, a perfect launchpad for this circular walk. From here, your route loops around the key historic highlights of the city:
- St Aldate’s – Pass Oxford Town Hall and Christ Church College, home to the famous dining hall seen in Harry Potter.
- Folly Bridge – Cross the River Thames (the Isis) with views of punts and rowing crews.
- Christ Church Meadow – Peaceful greenery with paths along the river and classic Oxford views.
- Merton Street – Cobbled and atmospheric, this takes you past Merton and Corpus Christi colleges.
- Radcliffe Square – The heart of old Oxford: Radcliffe Camera, University Church, and Bodleian Library all in one place.
- Catte Street – See the Bridge of Sighs and head towards New College Lane.
- Broad Street – Bookshops, the Sheldonian Theatre, and Blackwell’s make this a lively stroll.
- Covered Market – Optional detour for food, artisan shops, and a great Oxford buzz.
- High Street – One of Oxford’s grandest streets, lined with colleges and old inns.
This is a relaxed and rewarding route full of history, with plenty of cafés and museums if you want to extend your day. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a repeat explorer, this walk reveals the best of Oxford in just a few hours.
