All my walking guides and adventures are free to read, thanks to the support of kind folks like you. That said, creating and walking each route takes time (and plenty of coffee!), so if you’ve enjoyed this post or found it useful, feel free to share it around — or even treat me to a coffee or two. The Mam Tor Circular is one of the most iconic ridge walks in the Peak District. This 8km loop from Castleton offers unbeatable views, steady climbs, and dramatic landscape shaped by landslides and geology. It’s a classic hike that packs in a lot without needing a full day out.
You’ll take in Mam Tor (the ‘Shivering Mountain’), the Great Ridge leading to Lose Hill, and a scenic return via green fields and country lanes. Great for all levels, including families and first-time Peak District walkers.

Hike Description
Starting from Castleton, follow signs towards the old road and up to Mam Tor via a well-laid stone path. It’s a short but rewarding climb to the trig point, where you’ll get big views over Edale, Kinder Scout, and the Hope Valley.
From here, follow the iconic Great Ridge east towards Hollins Cross and on to Lose Hill, a lovely ridge walk with rolling countryside on both sides. After tagging the top of Lose Hill, descend down to the fields below and loop back towards Castleton along quiet lanes and farmland paths.
